# Set up competitor tracking across AI search platforms

> Learn how to add competitors to Klove, track their AI citations and sentiment, and use that data to sharpen your own AI search optimisation strategy.

Klove's Competitive Intelligence feature lets you see exactly how AI platforms describe, position, and cite your competitors — and compare that directly against your own visibility. This guide walks you through adding competitors, selecting benchmarking platforms, reading the comparison dashboard, and translating competitive signals into content and outreach actions.

<Steps>
  ### Navigate to Competitive Intelligence

  In the left navigation, click **Competitive Intelligence**. If you haven't added any competitors yet, you'll see an empty state with a prompt to add your first one.

  Competitive tracking runs on the same daily cadence as your Prompt Monitoring — Klove re-runs all your tracked prompts each day and records competitor mentions, positions, and cited sources alongside your own results.

  ### Add your competitors

  Click **Add competitor** and enter either a domain or a brand name.

  * **Domain** (e.g. `hubspot.com`) — recommended, since Klove can match domain references even when AI uses different name variations
  * **Brand name** (e.g. `HubSpot`) — use this for brands that are frequently mentioned without a URL, or for direct competitors without a strong online presence

  You can add as many competitors as your plan allows. After adding each one, Klove begins tracking them retroactively against your existing prompt history (where data exists) and going forward from today.

  <Tip>
    Start with **2–3 close competitors** rather than tracking your entire market. A tight competitive set gives you the clearest signal on relative performance. Once you understand those dynamics, you can add more.
  </Tip>

  Useful types of competitors to add:

  * **Direct product competitors** — brands in the same category solving the same problem
  * **Category leaders** — even if they're much larger, tracking market leaders tells you what AI already trusts in your space
  * **Emerging challengers** — smaller, newer entrants whose content strategy you can learn from

  ### Select platforms to benchmark

  After adding competitors, go to **Competitive Intelligence → Settings** and confirm which AI platforms you want to benchmark across.

  Klove defaults to tracking competitors on the same platforms you've selected for your own Prompt Monitoring. You can add additional platforms for competitive tracking if you want broader coverage without tracking those platforms for your own brand.

  <Note>
    Competitor data is derived from the same prompts you're already tracking. If a competitor only appears in prompts you haven't added, you won't see those mentions. Expand your prompt set if you notice gaps in coverage.
  </Note>

  ### Read the competitive dashboard

  Navigate to **Competitive Intelligence → Dashboard**. The main view shows a side-by-side comparison of you and your competitors across three key metrics.

  **Share of voice**

  Share of voice shows what proportion of all brand mentions across your tracked prompts belongs to each competitor versus you. This is the headline metric for understanding relative AI search dominance.

  * If your share of voice is lower than a competitor on category queries, it means AI is recommending them more often when buyers are in the discovery phase.
  * Share of voice is tracked over time, so you can see whether a competitor is gaining or losing ground after content or PR activity.

  **Position ranking**

  Position shows where in the AI response each brand typically appears. Position 1 is the first brand mentioned; being cited later in a response has less influence on buyer decisions.

  * Compare your average position to competitors on **comparison queries** specifically — these are the prompts where position has the highest commercial impact.
  * A competitor consistently ranked first on `best [category] for [use case]` prompts represents a specific gap to close.

  **Sentiment benchmark**

  Sentiment tracks whether AI platforms describe each brand positively, neutrally, or negatively. Compare your sentiment scores to competitors to identify:

  * Categories where you're described more favourably than competitors (a potential positioning advantage to double down on)
  * Categories where a competitor is described more positively despite similar capabilities (often indicates better third-party coverage or review site presence)

  Click on any competitor to drill into their individual prompt-level results and see the full AI response text for any given prompt.

  ### Identify and act on competitor citation sources

  The most actionable data in Competitive Intelligence is the **Sources** panel. Navigate to **Competitive Intelligence → Sources** to see the specific URLs that AI platforms cite when generating responses that mention your competitors.

  These are the pages that AI already trusts in your category. For each source you find:

  * **Is it a review platform?** (e.g. G2, Capterra, TrustRadius) — Make sure your brand is listed and has strong reviews on the same platform.
  * **Is it a comparison or listicle article?** — Reach out to the publication to be included, or create a competing piece that targets the same queries.
  * **Is it a competitor's own content?** — Analyse the format, depth, and structure. Create a comparable piece that covers the same topic from your perspective.
  * **Is it a third-party media outlet?** — Contact the author or editor to pitch your brand as an addition or a follow-up feature.

  <Tip>
    Filter the Sources view to show only sources that appear for **competitors but not for you**. These are the highest-priority citation gaps — pages AI already trusts in your category that don't yet mention your brand.
  </Tip>

  Klove's **Agent Flows** feature uses automated Moves to help you act on these citation gaps. Review your Agent Flows board for scheduled or event-triggered workflows — for example, earning placement in a publication's category guide, or creating a comparison page targeting a specific prompt.
</Steps>

<Note>
  Competitive Intelligence data updates daily alongside your Prompt Monitoring. Check back weekly rather than daily for trend analysis — day-to-day fluctuations are normal and directional changes over 7–14 days are more meaningful.
